Focus: Understanding thanksgiving as a spiritual attitude that brings honour to God and opens the door to more of His blessings
This 20th anniversary thanksgiving message teaches that gratitude is not merely something we say with our lips; it is an attitude of the heart.
Using Psalm 50:14–15, the sermon shows that thanksgiving, obedience and covenant faithfulness position believers to call upon God in the day of trouble and experience His deliverance.
The message calls every believer to develop an attitude of gratitude, recognising that thanksgiving honours God, preserves joy, changes perspective and makes room for greater testimonies.
Thanksgiving becomes a habit that attracts more grace — 10:10
In everything give thanks because we do not know the full story — 20:15
The thankful spirit and generous spirit are connected — 24:02
The sermon opens with appreciation to God and gratitude for the warmth of RCCG Overcomers House Gloucester. The preacher thanks the congregation for their love, honour and hospitality, and declares that when the church celebrates 30 years, it will not be in the same building but in a better place.
The congregation then enters a moment of worship, singing about the steadfast love of the Lord and declaring, “Great is Thy faithfulness.” This connects the thanksgiving service to Lamentations 3:22–23, which reminds us that God’s mercies are new every morning.
The preacher gives thanks to God for 20 glorious years of His work in Gloucester. God is acknowledged as the Ebenezer of the church, the One who has led, helped and sustained the assembly until now.
The message then introduces the theme: The Blessings in Thanksgiving.
The main Bible text is Psalm 50:14–15, where God says:
“Offer to God thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High. Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”
The sermon explains that thanksgiving is not separate from obedience. God calls His people to offer thanksgiving, pay their vows and then call upon Him in the day of trouble. Thanksgiving, commitment and obedience create a spiritual posture that honours God and prepares the believer for deliverance.
The preacher teaches that the quality of our lives is deeply connected to how thankful we are towards God. People who cannot appreciate life often struggle to see its value, while those who recognise God’s hand are able to live with joy, purpose and gratitude.
Every person on earth owes God a debt of gratitude. Where we are today may be the place someone else is praying to reach. Our current position, family, health, salvation, church community and opportunities are all reasons to return thanks to God.
The sermon teaches that when thanksgiving becomes a habit, favour increases. God recognises the person who is consistently grateful, sacrificial and thankful. 2 Corinthians 4:15 shows that grace reaching more people causes thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.
The preacher then challenges the congregation to change perspective. Some complain that roses have thorns, while others rejoice that thorns have roses. In life, some people complain, while others choose to give thanks even when it is not convenient.
This reflects 1 Thessalonians 5:18, which commands believers to give thanks in everything because this is the will of God in Christ Jesus.
Thanksgiving is presented as the doorway to joy. A person who is thankful for little enjoys much, but the unappreciative person remains miserable and constantly dissatisfied.
The sermon then gives the example of the lame man at the Beautiful Gate in Acts 3:1–10. He had been lame from birth and had never known what it felt like to walk. When Peter and John lifted him up and his ankles received strength, he entered the temple walking, leaping and praising God.
His thanksgiving was immediate, visible and expressive. He had received what he never thought possible, and his gratitude became a public testimony.
The preacher also refers to King Hezekiah in Isaiah 38:1–20. When Hezekiah was told to prepare for death, he turned his face to the wall and reminded God of how he had walked before Him. Hezekiah understood that only the living can praise God.
This teaches that thanksgiving and praise are part of a believer’s spiritual testimony before God. The preacher describes praise as Powerful Resistance Against Intimidation and the Strategy of the Enemy. When believers praise God, they are not merely singing; they are resisting spiritual intimidation.
The message warns that many people have become specialists in misery, constantly counting the wrongs done to them. Ingratitude keeps wounds alive, but gratitude helps believers forgive the past and focus on what God has given them today.
Gratitude must therefore come from the heart, not only from the lips. 2 Corinthians 9:12 teaches that service to God’s people not only supplies needs but also produces many thanksgivings to God.
The sermon also highlights Psalm 126:2–3, where people testified that the Lord had done great things. When God brings deliverance, healing, survival or restoration, thanksgiving should overflow.
The preacher explains why believers must give thanks in everything. First, we never know the full story. What we see is only part of the picture. Second, whatever we are facing could have been worse. Third, nobody knows tomorrow, but we know the One who holds tomorrow.
Thanksgiving today can become a spiritual covering for tomorrow.
The message also refers to the ten lepers in Luke 17:11–19. Only one returned to give thanks, and that one received more than cleansing. The preacher teaches that thanksgiving makes room for more.
A thankful spirit is also linked to a generous spirit. When a person is thankful for little, God can entrust them with more. Giving proves that greed and fear have been conquered. It shows that a believer trusts God enough to release what is in their hand, believing that God can bring something greater.
The sermon concludes by defining thanksgiving as the entrance fee to a lifelong taste of power, the gateway to breakthroughs, joy and success, and the beginning of untold experiences of true riches.
The preacher then releases prophetic declarations over the church and families connected to the ministry. God’s faithfulness will not diminish; His grace will carry His people through; every Goliath will be disgraced; hard ground will become soft ground; and God will make His people outstanding.
The service closes with a special prayer for Pastor Joshua and his wife. The congregation is encouraged to pray for them, recognising the hidden labour, sacrifice, night prayers and emotional burden involved in pastoral ministry.
The preacher reminds the church that pastors often put their own needs aside to care for others. The final prayer asks God to strengthen, favour, protect and answer them, and to keep RCCG Overcomers House Gloucester in His grace.
Psalm 50:14–15 teaches believers to offer thanksgiving to God and pay their vows to the Most High.
Thanksgiving is not casual politeness. It is a spiritual offering that honours God and positions believers to call upon Him in the day of trouble.
The sermon teaches that our outlook on life is affected by our level of gratitude.
Those who recognise God’s mercy can find reasons to rejoice, while those who focus only on what is wrong often remain trapped in dissatisfaction.
Where you are today may be the place someone else is praying to reach.
Life, salvation, family, health, provision, church community and opportunities are all reasons to return thanks to God.
When thanksgiving becomes a habit, it creates room for more of God’s favour.
2 Corinthians 4:15 shows that grace causes thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.
Some complain that roses have thorns, while others rejoice that thorns have roses.
The same situation can produce complaint or thanksgiving depending on the posture of the heart.
The sermon teaches that if a person wants to find joy, they must first find thanksgiving.
The one who is thankful for little enjoys much, while the ungrateful person remains miserable even when blessings are present.
The lame man at the Beautiful Gate did not hide his thanksgiving after receiving strength in his ankles.
His walking, leaping and praising God became a public testimony of divine intervention. See Acts 3:1–10.
The sermon describes praise as Powerful Resistance Against Intimidation and the Strategy of the Enemy.
When believers praise God, they resist fear, discouragement and the strategies of darkness.
Ingratitude keeps old wounds alive, but gratitude helps believers release the past and recognise what God has given them today.
A grateful heart is more willing to forgive and move forward.
True thanksgiving is not merely verbal.
It flows from a heart that recognises God’s goodness and responds through worship, service, giving and obedience.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 teaches believers to give thanks in everything.
The sermon explains that we should give thanks because we do not know the full story, things could have been worse and God holds tomorrow.
Grateful people express gratitude.
Like the one leper who returned to thank Jesus, genuine thanksgiving finds a way to come back, bow down and give glory to God.
The returning leper received more than cleansing.
Thanksgiving can open the door to deeper restoration, greater blessing and a fuller testimony. See Luke 17:11–19.
The sermon teaches that giving reveals trust.
A person who can release what is in their hand shows that greed and fear are no longer ruling their heart.
Thanksgiving is described as the gateway to breakthroughs, joy and success.
It brings believers into a deeper experience of God’s power, favour and true riches.
The congregation is reminded to pray for Pastor Joshua and his wife.
Pastors often carry hidden burdens, pray through the night and set aside personal needs in order to care for God’s people.

Father, strengthen Pastor Joshua and his wife in spirit, soul and body.
Lord, remember their labour, sacrifice, prayers and service over the past 20 years.
Father, let RCCG Overcomers House Gloucester continue to grow in grace, vision and impact.
May the Lord give you a heart of thanksgiving and an attitude of gratitude.
You will not be trapped in complaint, bitterness or ingratitude. The Lord will open your eyes to recognise His goodness, His mercy and His daily blessings over your life.
As you give thanks, may joy increase. As you praise God, may every intimidation and strategy of the enemy be resisted and defeated.
The faithfulness of God towards your family will not diminish. His enabling grace that has brought you this far will carry you through. His mercy will endure forever over your household and over RCCG Overcomers House Gloucester.
Every Goliath asking for your God will be publicly disgraced. The Lord will fight for you, and you will hold your peace.
You will become a living proof of God’s wonders. The Lord will make you outstanding, draw out your gifts and talents, and cause His glory to be seen in your life.
May God strengthen Pastor Joshua and his wife, answer their prayers, reward their sacrifices and take RCCG Overcomers House Gloucester into greater grace, greater vision and greater testimonies.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
